"Oh, before I forget..."
by Wendy Godfrey
Wendy Godfrey, with her husband Frank, a retired Methodist Minister, retired to Gloucester in 1991. Wendy, a Scarborough girl, was the youngest child in a large family. Her father, William Ramm D.S.M. was a trawlerman who served at Dunkirk and Wendy lived her early years in Commercial Street and Scalby Avenue, Newby.
Wendy studied at Hull University College then taught English at Burton-on-Trent Girls’ High School. At St Mark’s, Newby, in 1956 she married Frank Godfrey, a Methodist Minister and shared his work in the churches in Burton, Clifton (Nottingham), Crawley (West Sussex), Redditch, and Eastbourne before they retired to Gloucester.
This experience in the churches, especially in new areas, led her to see a great need to work with the community. Beginning in the 1960’s with the pioneering days of playgroups, she went on to create a major social survey in Clifton Nottingham, and eventually re-trained to be a Community Worker in Social Services Departments.
She initiated Community Care groups, encouraged schools to co-operate in dealing with truancy problems, established clubs and centres for disabled people, and successfully supported residents in their protest against the destruction of their homes to make way for a new road.
Drama, gardening, oil painting and music are all part of this story of a very full life and Wendy tells of her family life with Frank and their three children
Wendy’s great friend, Peggy, died as a result of Alzheimer’s disease so she hopes that the sale of this book will raise £1000 for research into this terrible disease.
The book is priced at £10.50 plus £1.75 p&p.
