This unusual first world war trip is based upon the diary account by Captain Robert Hamilton of his experiences during the first five months of the War.
He recorded his experiences of the Royal Warwicks’ campaign in northern France, describing in detail the places visited, route marches, appalling weather conditions, mud and the constant dangers of shelling and sniping. He also painted a vivid picture of life behind the lines in French towns and villages.
Itinerary
The itinerary, which follows the diary entries, includes:
• The Marne and Aisne areas of conflict where the Royal Warwicks halted the advancing Germans in September and October 1914
• The route taken by the Regiment from St. Omer to Armentieres in late November and early December
• ‘Plugstreet Wood’ near Ypres where the Royal Warwicks were engaged in trench warfare with the 134th Saxons
• The exact location of the historic Christmas Truce, initiated by Captain Hamilton at St. Yvon
• Battlefields (e.g. Meteren,) Cemeteries (e.g. Meteren, Prowse Point, Houplines) and Memorials (Ploegsteert and Menin Gate)
• Farms, billets, estaminets, railway stations and other places of interest visited by Captain Hamilton and the Royal Warwicks.

The trip, led by experienced Battlefields guide Alan Reed, costs £450 and includes:
• 2 nights B&B in the Marne and Aisne areas (the Citotel at Chateau Thierry & BW Les Beaux Arts at Compiegne)
• 3 nights at the Ypres Novotel
• Travel by executive coach
• Crossings with P&O Ferries from Dover to Calais
• Insurance cover (medical restrictions apply)
• Evening meals and lunches are extra and there will be a £105 surcharge for single rooms.
